Skoda planning low-cost EV, three all-electric models

Along with its Vision IV-aping production models, the Czech brand will do an entry-level EV for the masses.

Skoda will build three pure-electric models on the modular Volkswagen MEB platform by 2023, including a low-cost compact.

According to Automotive News Europe, the range will be headed by a production take on the Vision IV concept unveiled at the Geneva motor show. A cheaper, simpler SUV will sit below it in the range, once again with styling inspired by the concept.

Price wise, the Vision IV will be on a par with the Kodiaq SUV or top-spec Superb. Locally, that would put it between $52k and $57k before on-road costs.

But the more exciting news was (arguably) confirmation a member of the cheaper, less complex "MEB entry family" will also feature in the future Skoda range.

"We are looking for a lower specced car and once we have a positive business case we will come up with a clear solution," said CEO Bernhard Maier.

Although he's confident Skoda's production setup – electric vehicles will be built in the Czech Republic, alongside the Octavia – will allow it to effectively adapt to changes in customer demand on the move, he admitted the company doesn't know how the market will react to its pure-electric and electrified offerings.

Skoda is planning for 25 per cent of all its sales to be electrified by 2025, with demand for pure-electric vehicles to be satiated by five pure EVs.
