Toyota 86, Subaru BRZ: Second generation confirmed

Affordable rear-wheel-drive coupes will be renewed, but it's not clear when they will appear, according to the latest instalment in the inconsistent story about their second generation.

A senior executive at Toyota has confirmed a next-generation version of the Toyota 86 and Subaru BRZ will be developed.

Matt Harrison, head of marketing for Toyota Europe, has told Autocar the company is intending to develop a second-generation Toyota 86.

He said it was safe to assume the next-generation sports coupe will be made in conjunction with Subaru, and use the smaller automaker's flat-four engine.

Not long after the Supra finally made its production debut, reports began surfacing about the demise of the 86 and BRZ twins.

Harrison stated the Supra is not a replacement for the 86, noting "they are for different audiences and are different products".

Global volumes for the 86 and BRZ twins are small, but according to Harrison that's not really the point, as the 86 is all about "adding excitement to the brand and emotional appeal".

Rumours indicate the next-generation 86 and BRZ could debut as early as 2021.
