2020 BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe teased

New body style will be one of two front-wheel drive BMW models launched this year, along with the 1 Series hatch.

The new BMW 2 Series Gran Coupe has been teased at the luxury automaker's annual press conference.

BMW has confirmed the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will use the latest version of the company's front- and all-wheel drive architecture. The next-generation 1 Series hatch will ditch its current rear-wheel drive underpinnings for this platform too.

According to BMW, the smallest Gran Coupe will make its public debut at the 2019 Los Angeles motor show in November before going on sale globally from the second quarter of 2020.

The next-generation 1 Series hatch "will also be presented during the course of 2019". Given the 1 Series is most popular in Europe, it will likely step out at, or just before, the Frankfurt motor show in September.

From today's teaser we can see the 2 Series Gran Coupe's tail-lights, boot lip spoiler and short rear deck for the first time, as well as the shape of the side windows and Hofmeister kink.

It also confirms the car will feature frameless windows, which the company has tried to disguise in earlier spy photos.

Like the Mercedes-Benz CLA, which it will compete against, performance variants of the new 2 Series Gran Coupe will likely feature a turbocharged four-cylinder engine coupled to an all-wheel drive system.
