2019 Mazda CX-8 gets Apple CarPlay, price hike

A mild makeover for the CX-8 brings with it new equipment, new wheels and a higher price across the range.

Mazda has announced a number of small revisions for its CX-8, including Apple CarPlay and Android Auto as standard, accompanied by a small price rise across the range.

The 2019 version of the CX-8, which slots between the CX-5 and petrol-only CX-9, now gets the G-Vectoring Control (GVC Plus) system as standard, along with tyre-pressure monitoring and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto.

Subtle changes have been made to the climate control panel on the centre console across the range, while the range-topping Asaki gets ventilated front seats, a 7.0-inch digital display in the instrument binnacle, LED ambient lighting, and a frameless rear-view mirror.

Outside, there's an LED licence plate light (seriously), and new colours for the wheels on both Sport and Asaki grades. The tweaks are subtle, then. The changes mirror those revealed for Japan in October 2018, although we're not getting the 2.5-litre petrol options.

As before, the base Sport FWD ($43,410 before on-roads, +$920) comes with red-and-black cloth trim, piano black dashboard garnish and chrome highlights as standard inside, along with niceties like rear air vents, three-zone climate control, and a pretty handy haul of active safety gear.

Blind-spot monitoring, high-beam assist, lane-keep assist, lane-departure warning, adaptive cruise control with stop/go, rear cross-traffic alert and autonomous emergency braking are all standard, along with a rear-view camera and parking sensors.

All-wheel drive adds $3880 to the base model, while the range-topping Asaki is worth $62,590 before on-road costs, up $1100.

Jumping to the Asaki adds nappa leather trim to the heated seats (front and outboard rear) as standard, in either black/red or white, and real wood inserts for the dashboard and doors. Rear-window sun blinds, a 10-speaker Bose audio system and a heated steering wheel are also standard in the top-spec car.

On the safety front, the Asaki gains a 360-degree surround-view monitor, adaptive LED headlights and keyless entry with push-button start. Outside, a set of 19-inch alloy wheels distinguishes the CX-8 Asaki from lesser variants.

We're waiting on official images of the new CX-8. The CarPlay image has been lifted from Japan, as evidenced by the Japanese app names. We'll update the story when new pictures become available.
