2020 Chevrolet Tracker leaked, is this the new Holden Trax?

New images out of China reveal GM's new SUV alongside its more premium Buick twin. While unconfirmed, this could be the replacement for the ageing Holden Trax.

The all-new 2020 Chevrolet Tracker has been leaked alongside the 2020 Buick Encore in a series of images out of China, giving us a first look at GM's new compact crossover.

First teased during a product presentation in January, these new images posted to Carscoops and GM Authority show the new Tracker and Encore, which are both longer and wider than the current Trax.

Measuring 4270mm long, 1791mm wide and 1627mm high in Chinese specification, the Tracker adds 22mm in length, 25mm in width, and 15mm between the axles.

The version offered in China will be powered at launch by a 1.0-litre turbocharged three-cylinder petrol engine making 115hp (87kW), paired with a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

Several US publications claim the Chinese-market Tracker and Encore (above) aren't indicative of the models destined for the North American market – and therefore Australia – as recently spied development prototypes appear to have different sheet metal, and allegedly ride on different platforms – though the VSS-F architecture suggested by GM Authority is reserved for passenger cars, not crossovers.

In saying that, the Buick Encore has historically been the American-badged version of the Opel Mokka – also evident in this new model's more Opel-esque design compared to the Chevrolet.

Furthermore, the Mokka is the European version of the Trax, albeit with a unique body and interior. With Opel's sale to PSA, however, the links between the two won't continue into the next generation.

It's believed the Tracker and Encore will make their official debut at the Shanghai motor show in April.

Our guess is that these two models preview the next-generation small SUV offerings from Chevrolet and Buick, though both will be tailored for global tastes – think more powerful engines, nicer interiors, and driver assistance tech that may only be available on flagship versions in China.

Should that be the case, the Tracker specifically could giveaway what to expect from the next Holden Trax, which has been on sale locally since 2013.

Another clue is that the current Trax is badged as the Tracker in Russia and South America.

For now we'll have to wait until the Shanghai motor show to get more official details, so stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest.
