2020 Mercedes-Benz GLC Coupe revealed, here late 2019

New coupe crossover surfaces ahead of its Australian introduction in the fourth quarter of 2019, featuring subtle design, technology and powertrain upgrades as per its more practical SUV twin.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled the refreshed GLC Coupe, which has undergone a similar update to its wagon-bodied sibling ahead of its Australian arrival in the fourth quarter of this year.

Design-wise there's not any dramatic changes, though the headlights, tail-lights and bumpers have all been revised, as has the front grille. All the changes are in keeping with the design language of the facelifted wagon, bringing the mid-sized crossovers in line with the new GLE.

'High Performance' LED headlights will be fitted as standard across the range, while the tail-light units are full-LED as well.

More noticeable changes have been made inside the cabin, namely with the introduction of the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) infotainment system incorporating new touchscreens measuring 7.0-inches at the base level and 10.25-inches at the higher end – Australian models will likely get the latter as standard.

With higher-resolution displays and 'Hey Mercedes' voice control inputs, the new infotainment setup can also be controlled via the capacitive touch buttons on the steering wheel, or with a touchpad on the centre console.

There's also a new 12.3-inch digital instrument binnacle ahead of the driver, in keeping with the updated GLC wagon and the related C-Class sedan, though the sedan misses out on the MBUX system.

Further changes have been made under the bonnet, too. The GLC200 and GLC300 petrol models benefit from the addition of 'EQ Boost' 48V mild-hybrid technology, which adds a belt-driven starter-generator for a 10kW/150Nm boost over short periods while also helping to shut off the combustion engine earlier when coming to a stop or when coasting to further reduce fuel consumption and emissions.

Both the 200 and 300 are powered by a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine, with the former developing 145kW and 320Nm, while the latter puts out 190kW and 370Nm. Both drive all four wheels via the company's 4Matic all-wheel drive system and a nine-speed automatic transmission.

Three diesels will be offered in Europe, too, the 200d, 220d and 300d. All are powered by the same four-cylinder oiler in different states of tune, with the 200d making 120kW/360Nm and the 220d putting out 143kW/400Nm.

At the top of the tree, the 300d offers 180kw and 500Nm. The entire diesel range is already compliant with the latest Euro 6d emissions standards, which come into force in 2020.

Rounding out the changes are the availability of new Dynamic Body Control with adjustable dampers as an option in place of the standard adaptive sports suspension, along with the introduction of more sophisticated adaptive cruise and lane-keep assist systems for semi-autonomous driving capability.

The smart cruise control system can adjust automatically ahead of bends or junctions, while an added function for the autonomous emergency braking system can stop the vehicle if the driver is about to steer into oncoming traffic.

Finally, the optional Energizing Comfort Control system can tailor the interior lighting, music, climate control, massage function and seat ventilation to different profiles "that fits the situation and individual".
