Tesla Model Y: ‘Coupe’ crossover teased one last time

Scheduled to be revealed later today, the fourth model in Tesla's range of electric vehicles will be roughly 10 per cent bigger and more expensive than the Model 3.

With hours to go until the Tesla Model Y is given its formal debut, the electric car maker has teased its second crossover on Twitter.

The video posted on the social media network shows the Model Y under a car cover, revealing the car's silhouette.

Just like the bigger Model X, the new crossover will have a steeply raked rear, meaning it shares more in common with a BMW X4 than a Toyota Kluger.

Unlike the Model X, the more affordable Model Y will not be equipped with Falcon Wing doors. It is expected to share many design cues with the Model 3 sedan, though.

Two weeks ago Elon Musk, Tesla's CEO, revealed the Model Y will be roughly 10 per cent larger than the Model 3, and will be priced accordingly.

According to the company's latest shareholder letter, the Model Y is expected to "achieve volume production by the end of 2020, most likely at Gigafactory 1".

Gigafactory 1 is Tesla's plant in Reno, Nevada, where the company currently produces battery packs in conjunction with Panasonic.

The Model Y will be unveiled today at a live-streamed event scheduled for 8pm Pacific Daylight Time (2pm Australian Eastern Daylight Time) at the company's design studios in Los Angeles.

It should be noted Elon Musk has a habit of turning up late - exceptionally late, sometimes - to these sort of events, so budget for that if you're planning on tuning in.
