Porsche 917 ‘concept study’ revealed

Slinky red-and-white show car celebrates the 50th anniversary of Porsche's iconic 917 Le Mans racer, and is being presented to the public at the Porsche Museum.

Porsche has revealed a very special 'concept study' as it celebrates 50 years of the 917 – dubbed by the marque as "the most famous racing car of all time".

First presented at the 1969 Geneva motor show, the Porsche 917 (below) dominated various motorsport events (including Le Mans and the North American CanAM Series) from the late 1960s through to the mid-70s.

Now, some 50 years later, Porsche has issued a single image of a modern interpretation of its motorsport icon (top), though this vehicle is said to be "purely a concept study".

The red-and-white display vehicle was created by a "small team of designers and engineers", paying homage to the livery worn by the 1970 Le Mans-winning vehicle. It's being presented to the public for the first time as part of a 50th anniversary exhibition for the 917 at the Porsche Museum in Germany.

While it's strictly a design exercise, there's clearly visual links to the recent 918 Spyder hybrid hypercar, namely in the curvacious frontal design and the alloy wheels.

Scheduled to run from May 14 through September 15, the 917 concept study will join ten 917 models that have a collective power output of 7795PS (5733kW), along with a slew of racing posters and technical exhibits.
