Morgan sold off, new Plus Six revealed

Inline-six power from the Z4 and Supra highlights an all-new Plus Six, which also gets a new chassis and fresh interior. Plus, the brand is now Italian-owned.

Morgan has pulled the covers from its new Plus Six, which debuts a new chassis and Toyota Supra power for the brand, having announced an Italian finance firm is now its owner.

Having made a significant investment in Morgan, Investindustrial will look to improve the brand's Malvern Link factory and attempt to improve sales outside of its UK home. The new Plus Six was already developed before the new ownership, instead funded by a British Government program designed to encourage lower-emissions vehicles.

Which brings us neatly to the Plus Six, powered by the same 3.0L turbocharged inline-six as the BMW Z4 and Toyota Supra, mated to a ZF-sourced eight-speed automatic transmission.

With 335hp (250kW) of power shifting just 1075kg, the Plus Six will scoot to 100km/h in just 4.2 seconds on its way to 165mph (265km/h).

Under the skin is a new chassis dubbed CX, which takes advantage of old-fashioned ash as part of its construction. There's plenty of aluminium throughout as well, though. The vehicle is 20mm longer than its predecessor, with 200mm more legroom.

Oh, and if you need to store things, the extra 31 per cent of luggage space will come in handy. It's not necessarily practical, but the new Plus Six is more practical than its predecessors.

The car rides on a set of MacPherson struts up front and a four-link rear setup, backed by a stiffer, more sophisticated combination of track-rod ends, bushes and anti-roll bars than before. All of that should help make the Plus Six a more capable Morgan in the corners.

Behind the wheel, the Plus Six has been completely redesigned. The centre console is trimmed in beautiful walnut, with art-deco dials and a minimalist steering wheel. The gear lever and paddles, though? They're direct from the BMW Z4.

A total of four variants will be offered at launch: Plus Six, Plus Six Touring, Plus Six First Edition in blue, and the same First Edition in emerald.

Niceties like remote central locking, puddle lighting and automatic high-beam headlights are offered, many of which are firsts for Morgan.

The new Plus Six was revealed at the Geneva motor show. We've reached out to Morgan Australia to see if the new Plus Six will be available locally.
