Bugatti La Voiture Noire: $17.6 million hypercar unveiled

Bugatti's one-off model has a bespoke carbon-fibre body, and is claimed to be the world's most expensive car. As in, ever. Hmmm.

The Bugatti La Voiture Noire has been unveiled on the second press day of the 2019 Geneva motor show, complete with the largest price tag ever affixed to a new car.

La Voiture Noire, literally The Black Car, is said to be inspired the Type 57 SC Atlantic designed by Jean Bugatti, son of the company's founder Ettore Bugatti. Only four Atlantic coupes were made, with three still in existence.

Its bespoke body has a more organic design than its siblings, and is made from carbon-fibre finished with a deep black gloss. La Voiture Noire's subtle central spine is a nod to the Type 57 SC Atlantic.

Although no photos of the interior have been released, the company says the coupe has the "comfort of a luxury limousine".

This special one-off car was sold to a Bugatti enthusiast for €11 million ($17.6 million) before tax. To put that into perspective, a bog-standard Chiron will set you back a mere €2.4 million ($3.8 million).

Behind the passenger cell is the company's 8.0-litre quad-turbo W16 engine cranking out 1103kW of power, and 1600Nm of torque.

While the output of the engine is unchanged from the Chiron and Chiron Sport, neither of those vehicles have six exhaust tips poking out the back.

Bugatti has not quoted performance figures for this car. As the car has been commissioned for luxury, we expect its top speed to be below the Chiron's 420km/h.

It could share the Chiron's 0-100km/h time of 2.4 seconds, but we may never know.
