2019 Nissan Leaf pricing and specs

Pricing will kick off at $49,990 before on-road costs, with pre-orders officially open.

Power comes from an electric motor on the front axle making 110kW and 320Nm, hooked up to a 40kWh battery pack for a claimed 270km of range on the WLTP test cycle.

That puts it ahead of the $44,990 before on-roads Hyundai Ioniq Electric and its 230km claim for range, although that is a real-world figure calculated in-house, not a WLTP number. Read into that what you will.

A full charge takes 7.5 hours using a 7kW home fast charger, while running from 20 to 80 per cent is the work of just an hour on a highway-side fast charger.

Only one spec level will be offered, and it won't be a stripper. LED headlights, 17-inch alloy wheels, privacy glass, power-folding mirrors, dusk-sensing headlights, auto-dimming mirrors, rain-sensing wipers and push-button start will all be stock... and yes, there's no alternative to push-button start on an electric vehicle.

Other features will include a heated steering wheel, heated front and rear seats, and the first Nissan infotainment system to get Apple CarPlay and Android Auto in Australia. Better late than never, hey?

Given it's designed to be Nissan's future technology flagship for now, the Leaf will be loaded with the brand's full suite of ProPilot semi-autonomous safety features.

Autonomous emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert and a 360-degree camera will all be standard on local models.

Six colour choices will be offered: white, white with a black roof, red, black, platinum and gunmetal.

"With strong interest in the new Nissan Leaf we see great potential for the vehicle and at this price we are giving it every chance to succeed,” said Nissan Australia's managing director Stephen Lester.

"It’s certainly an exciting time for EV buyers. With a contemporary design, increased range and long list of standard features, this incredibly fun to drive car presents Australian electric vehicle buyers with a stylish, affordable option."

According to Nissan, over 11,000 customers have already registered their interest in the Leaf.
