Fiat Concept Centoventi revealed

Compact electric Italian concept aims to bring long-range, affordable motoring to the masses through modular design. There's enough personalisation options to make a Mini look bland, too.

Fiat has revealed the Concept Centoventi at the Geneva motor show, a modular electric vehicle designed to shake up the way we buy and specify cars.

Built under the 'ABC' formula of car design – that's Affordable But Cool, apparently – the Centoventi is something of a blank canvas waiting to be customised. Pictured here in subtle white-on-grey, theoretical buyers are able to choose between four roof, bumper, wheel and wrap designs to create their own vehicle.

Likewise, the interior will support a huge range of different configurations. Want to attach a speaker to the dashboard? Sure, why not! Need a child seat? There's a mounting point for that as well.

Lightweight, colourful textiles and plastics have been used throughout the cabin to keep things inexpensive – but whether you'd want to tell people there are similarities between your car and Crocs, as the above image does, is up for debate. That approach also means you'll be able to change the car as your tastes adapt, which is a nice touch.

The rear seats are on a sliding bench, which can be moved to create a capacious boot.

The modular, adjustable theme carries over to the electric powertrain, which can offer between 100 and 500km of range depending on spec. Instead of buying a car with the battery capacity already determined, Fiat will sell battery modules allowing people to adjust their range on the fly.

That also means owners can charge their battery modules like they would an e-bike battery, plugged into a charge station while the car is elsewhere.

Should you want to charge away from home, the charge cable and port are located at the base of the windscreen. Fiat says this saves space in the boot by removing the need for a chunky cable coil. The socket actually lights up and can be used as a torch or windscreen defroster.
