Jeep Renegade and Compass plug-in hybrids revealed

The fresh Fiat Chrysler drivetrain includes an electric motor for the rear axle, and promises to deliver 50km of electric-only driving for eco-conscious off-roading. Or on-roading...

Plug-in hybrid versions of the Jeep Renegade and Jeep Compass have been revealed at the 2019 Geneva motor show, as Fiat Chrysler continues to push electrified power with the Jeep brand.

Under the bonnet of both plug-in hybrid crossovers will be a turbocharged 1.3-litre petrol engine. An electric motor for the rear axle allows for on-demand all-wheel drive.

Final figures for the new plug-in hybrid drivetrain have yet to be confirmed, but the company is expecting it to have between 142kW and 179kW of power.

With both electric and petrol motors running in tandem, a 0-100km/h time of around seven seconds is expected. Overall fuel economy will be rated at around 2.2L/100km on the combined cycle, although real-world results will vary based on how heavily the driver uses the battery.

The Renegade PHEV and Compass PHEV are said to have an electric-only range of around 50 kilometres, and an electric-only top speed of roughly 130km/h.

In addition to featuring filler caps on both rear quarter panels, the plug-in hybrid Renegade and Compass models will also have redesigned instrument clusters and a new read-outs in the infotainment system.
