Mitsubishi Outlander concept unveiled

The Engleberg concept car looks like a flight of fancy, but it’s a rather large clue to the next Outlander PHEV.

Mitsubishi has given the clearest indication yet of what its next generation Outlander will look like.

The Mitsubishi Engelberg Tourer concept unveiled at the 2019 Geneva motor show is a pointer to its new styling direction.

What the photos don’t show, though, is that this is the first Mitsubishi based on the new Alliance platform shared with joint venture partners Nissan and Renault.

The concept is a plug-in hybrid that uses two electric motors, one each for the front and rear axles.

The current Outlander PHEV has an electric-only driving range of about 50 kilometres before the petrol engine takes over and extends total range up to 500km.

The next-generation Outlander is said to have a larger battery capacity, increasing electric driving range to 70km before the 2.4-litre petrol engine takes over to cover a total distance of 700km.

Said to be at least two years away, the new Outlander will arrive before the next generation of the ASX soft-roader.

As for the name of the concept car, the Mitsubishi Engelberg is named after a famous ski resort in Switzerland, “best known for its panoramic views, well-groomed runs and challenging off-piste skiing and snowboarding”.

Mitsubishi promises that with longer petrol and electric driving range, the next Outlander PHEV will be better able to get to far-away places with less range anxiety.
