2020 Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake unveiled, not coming to Australia

The more practical sibling to the recently unveiled CLA sedan boasts a much wider boot opening than the original model.

The second-generation Mercedes-Benz CLA Shooting Brake has made its debut at the 2019 Geneva motor show, just two months after its sedan sibling stepped out in Las Vegas.

The new CLA Shooting Brake is 4688mm long, 1830mm wide, 1442mm tall, and rides on a 2729mm wheelbase. This means the new wagon is 48mm longer, 53mm wider, 2mm lower, and has a 30mm longer wheelbase than the old car.

Boot capacity, under the VDA standard, has grown 10 litres to 505L, but more importantly the width of the boot opening has grown 236mm to 871mm.

While the CLA sedan has a co-efficient of drag (Cd) of 0.23, the Shooting Brake has a Cd of 0.26.

Like the CLA sedan, and all the other vehicles based on the company's latest front- and all-wheel drive architecture, the Shooting Brake is fitted with the MBUX infotainment system.

When the car goes on sale in Europe from September, a 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder petrol engine with a particulate filter will power the top-spec CLA250 Shooting Brake. This motor generates 165kW of power and 350Nm of torque.

Depending on the model, the CLA Shooting Brake will be available with manual and automated dual-clutch transmissions, and the choice of front- or all-wheel drive.

Base models ride on 16-inch alloy wheels with 205/60 rubber, while top-of-the-range variants use 19-inch wheels with 225/40 tyres.

Available safety features will include steering assist, lane changing assistance, and an active cruise control setup that makes use of mapping data from the satellite navigation system.

Australia

The new CLA Shooting Brake won't be coming to Australia.

The company's local arm has confirmed to CarAdvice the small sales volume of the first-generation Shooting Brake means the business case for bringing the new car Down Under doesn't stack up.
