2011 Jeep Grand Cherokee confirmed for early next year

The all-new Jeep Grand Cherokee was launched last week in northern California, with vehicles expected to arrive in international markets throughout the second half of 2010. Jeep Australia says it will be available in our showrooms during the first quarter of 2011.

The new Grand Cherokee will come equipped with their new Quadra-Lift air suspension system, which is said to improve off-road capability whilst providing smooth on-road performance. In addition, there's a new Selec-Terrain traction control system that allows the driver to choose the drive system that best matches on or off road driving conditions. New front and rear independent suspension is also fitted, to aid on-road handling and comfort.

Mike Manley, President and Chief Executive Officer of Jeep Brand, Chrysler Group LLC, said in a recent release, “Unique innovations such as our new Quadra-Lift suspension and Selec-Terrain traction control systems separate Jeep from the crowd and take the new Grand Cherokee to the next level of 4x4 capability. The new generation of the iconic Jeep Grand Cherokee delivers the ideal blend of on-road refinement, craftsmanship, world-class design, improved fuel consumption, innovative features and legendary, real-world capability.”

The new Grand Cherokee will be available with two new engine packages; a new 3.6-litre Pentastar V6 and a revised 5.7-litre V8.

The V6 will be capable of providing an average fuel consumption rating of 11.4L/100km and emit 265g of CO2/km. These numbers mark a 10 percent improvement over the previous 3.7-litre V6. The new V6 also comes with variable-valve timing which helps it produce 210kW of power and 347Nm of torque, up by 59kW and 33Nm over the previous 3.7-litre.

The V8 fundamentals remain largely unchanged but it now outputs 259kW of power and 520Nm of torque instead of the previous 240/500, respectively.

A towing capacity of up to 3500kg for the V8 model is permitted, while the V6 is rated to tow 2268kg.

Pricing for the new Grand Cherokee hasn't yet been confirmed for Australia, but anticipate the cost to hover around the current Grand Cherokee price range of $59,990 for the base 3.0-litre TD model to $68,990 for the 5.7-litre V8 Limited.
