Jaguar I-Pace named European Car of the Year
The all-electric British SUV has been voted car of the year by a jury comprising of 60 motoring journalists from 23 countries across Europe. It's also the first time a Jaguar has won the award.
The Jaguar I-Pace has taken out European Car of the Year 2019, narrowly edging the Alpine A110 sports car for the prestigious title.
Picked from a field of seven finalists, the I-Pace impressed judges with its bold design and dynamic drive, despite its eco-friendly electric powertrain.
Both the I-Pace and A110 scored 250 points following the jury vote, which was then resolved by counting the number of top marks awarded to each – 18 for the Jaguar, and 16 for the Alpine.
It's the first time an electric vehicle has won the award, and it's also the first time a Jaguar has been named ECOTY.
"I-Pace was designed and engineered in the UK from a clean sheet of paper. It is the most technologically advanced battery electric vehicle. It’s a true game-changer. Winning European Car of the Year is an honour and real recognition of what our world-class team has delivered," said Dr. Ralf Speth, CEO for Jaguar Land Rover.
"For our first electric vehicle to also be the first Jaguar to win European Car of the Year gives us a huge sense of pride."
The award was collected by the company's design boss, Ian Callum (pictured).
Jaguar says it has already delivered more than 8000 I-Paces to customers since it launched last year, with 75 per cent of those vehicles residing in Europe.
Other finalists including the Kia Ceed, Ford Focus, Citroen C5 Aircross, Peugeot 508, and Mercedes-Benz A-Class.
