Skoda posts a strong start to 2019

Although it's still being held back by some supply constraints, Skoda is up by 21 per cent on its year-to-date figures from 2018, driven by the Kodiaq, Octavia and Superb.

Skoda Australia has defied market trends to record a strong start in 2019, posting double-digit growth for the January-March period compared to last year.

Driven by the Kodiaq SUV and mid-sized Octavia, which saw 173 and 93 registrations in February respectively, the Czech member of the Volkswagen Group managed a total of 495 sales for the month.

They were augmented by the Superb (84), Karoq (67), Fabia (60) owners, and the Rapid (18). The company says it's still experiencing supply constraints, particularly when it comes to the Octavia, an issue that's been holding the brand back since its launch in Australia.

"Since October, supply of the Octavia has been half of the previous rate of sales,” said Michael Irmer, Skoda Australia managing director.

“Octavia outperformed forecasts up until to Q3 2018 after which there was no additional supply. That has now been rectified, so Octavia will bounce back in the next quarter."

“The Kodiaq SUV is the biggest seller for Skoda now and we expect this to remain the case to further grow this year with production ramping up,” he added.

Skoda last year announced a bold plan to double its Australian sales within the next five years, with board member Alain Favey telling journalists the company has "really big ambitions" for cars like the Kodiaq. The existing range is just the start, however...

“We will bring a lot of new products over the next few years, starting next year, really a sort of fireworks of new car launches," Favey told our very own Rob Margeit.

The Scala will be the first new car launched next year on the very important hatchback market. We believe this market is very, very strong, here in Australia and the rest of the world.”

Once the Scala and Kamiq have rolled out, the company is planning to bring its first fully-electric vehicle in 2021.

Skoda’s ambitious local expansion plans would see the company sell around 12,000 cars annually by 2023.
