2019 Mercedes-AMG GT R Roadster revealed

Drop-top track weapon to be available overseas in strictly limited numbers, but sadly it won't be offered in Australia. Don't cry too much, AMG fans.

Mercedes-AMG has revealed the limited-edition GT R Roadster, blending the track-focused nature of the GT R coupe with the thrills of open-top motoring.

Just 750 examples will be produced, with power coming from the same 430kW/700Nm 4.0-litre bi-turbo V8 as the GT R coupe.

The company claims the drop-top GT R can hit 100km/h from a standstill in just 3.6 seconds (the same as the coupe), on its way to a top speed of 317km/h – just 1km/h shy of the coupe's vmax.

Drive is sent exclusively to the rear wheels via a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission, which also features a 'Race Start' launch control function.

In terms of equipment and specification the GT R Roadster is basically identical to the coupe, bar the folding fabric roof – a three-layered unit that is supported by a lightweight structure made of magnesium, steel and aluminium. The roof mechanism also features an acoustic mat to reduce noise.

A range of 14 exterior finishes are available, including the 'fine designo graphite grey magno matte' paint that is exclusive to the GT R Roadster and coupe.

Other unique touches include a '1 of 750' inscription on the centre console.

Like the coupe, the AMG GT R Roadster is available with an array of upholsteries and trim insert options, including various leathers, carbon-fibre bits inside and out, along with model-specific forged alloy wheels.

There's also yellow brake calipers, rear-wheel steering, wider tracks (+57mm at the rear), active aerodynamics systems, a fixed rear wing, AMG Performance seats in nappa leather, AMG-specific displays in the 12.3-inch driver's display and 10.25-inch infotainment screen, an AMG Performance steering wheel in microfibre, adjustable AMG Traction Control that can be configured on the steering wheel, and the AMG Performance sports exhaust system.

There's also AMG coil-over suspension with adaptive dampers, Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tyres all round (275/35 ZR19 front and 325/30 ZR20 rear), an electronically-controlled limited-slip rear differential, speed-sensitive sports steering, and a compound braking system with 390mm front and 360mm rear discs, with carbon-ceramic units available as an option.

Mercedes-AMG is yet to confirm an on-sale date for Europe or starting price.

Australia

Speaking with CarAdvice, Mercedes-Benz Australia's product communications manager, Ryan Lewis, said: "At this stage there are no plans to bring the GT R Roadster. We are focused on GT R Coupé and will continue to offer the GT and GT C Roadster variants in Australia".

Currently, the AMG GT R is priced from $351,129 before on-road costs, though that is the pre-facelift model. A mildly-refreshed range was revealed at the Los Angeles motor show last year, and is due Down Under in the second half of 2019.
