Seat el-Born concept unveiled

Electric hatch looks almost production ready, and gives us a few clues about the closely related Volkswagen ID Neo.

The Seat el-Born concept has been revealed ahead of its full debut at the 2019 Geneva motor show, which takes place next week, and looks almost ready for production.

Equipped with a 62kWh battery pack, the el-Born has an estimated driving range of 420 kilometres based on the WLTP cycle.

Using a compatible 100kW DC fast charger, the el-Born's battery can be topped up to 80 per cent within 47 minutes.

The top-shelf drivetrain to be offered on the el-Born, or whatever the production car will be known as, will have 150kW of power, and can propel the tall hatch from 0-100km/h in 7.5 seconds.

The el-Born has turbine-style 20-inch wheels that create "a positive flow of air that not only improves aerodynamics but also ventilates the brakes to maintain dynamism".

It also features sportily-styled bumpers, including a diffuser-like element at the rear, and a wheel-at-each corner stance.

The cabin is said to be especially spacious due to the tall body and flat floor. The dedicated electric vehicle architecture means there's enough space between the front seats to store a backpack.

There are a limited number of physical controls in the cabin, including the wiper and indicator wands, window and mirror switches, and a smattering of capacitive buttons placed on the steering wheel spokes, along the bottom of the infotainment display, and within a small pod above the driver's side air vent.

A 10.0-inch touchscreen occupies the centre of the dashboard, and there's a small digital instrumentation cluster ahead of the driver.

According to the automaker, Seat will be the second brand within the Volkswagen Group to launch a vehicle based on the MEB electric vehicle platform. The first car will be the Volkswagen ID Neo, which goes into production later this year.

Both vehicles will be built in Volkswagen's Zwickau plant. Given the two vehicles both have steeply raked windscreens, and tall hatch bodies, it will be interesting to see how similar or different they are.
