Porsche Macan: Current car to be built alongside new electric-only model
Production of the first-generation crossover will overlap with the new model during an indeterminate transition period.
The current Porsche Macan (pictured) will have its lifespan extended for an indefinite period, primarily to service markets where EV infrastructure is lacking as the second-generation rolls out in pure-electric form.
A senior spokesperson for Porsche told Autocar "the petrol-engine Macan will continue to be produced alongside the new electric PPE-based Macan in Leipzig".
The company admitted there will be transition period, but "just how long that will be has not yet been determined".
Porsche said "the move to a fully electric model line-up is suitable for certain markets but, due to a lack of infrastructure and other hurdles, it is yet not possible in other markets".
The current Macan won't be the first vehicle to be kept in production even after its successor is introduced. Some times manufacturers do this to provide a lower-cost version, or continue production of a low volume or low margin variant.
Earlier this week, Porsche confirmed the long-rumoured idea it'll make the second iteration of the popular Macan crossover an all-electric model.
The next-generation crossover will ride on a new platform, dubbed Platform Premium Electric (PPE), currently being developed by Audi and Porsche.
