Configurator Challenge: 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S

What does your ideal Porsche 911 look like? In our case, there's a lot of blue...

Customisation is in vogue at the moment, but choice can be seriously confusing. In our configurator challenge, we let the CarAdvice team loose on a manufacturer’s website to create their ideal spec of a certain model.

This week, we've taken on the 992 Porsche 911 Carrera S.

Let us know what you think in the comments, and which cars you’d like to see next!

UPDATE, 3/3/19: James Wong has added his (very green) configuration, let us know what you think in the comments!

The new 911 is a bit of a looker, hey? My theme for this week was making the most of the latent aggression lurking in those sensuous new hips, without undermining the inherent classiness of a 911. With that in mind, I've opted for Gentian Blue Metallic and a set of greyed-out RS Spyder wheels.

Gone is the 911 Carrera S badge from the rear, and I've opted for chrome trim around the windows. Classy, ya see. My car rides 10mm lower than stock thanks to the PASM sports suspension, but driveways hold no fear thanks to the nose lift system. Headlights? The LED Matrix units, naturally.

Inside, the sporty-yet-classy theme continues with Sport Tex-trimmed seats and a mostly black cabin, offset with red paint on the tacho, dash-top stopwatch, and seatbelts. I've also gone for the extended aluminium option, adding a dash of Germanic shine to proceedings. My wheel is trimmed in Alcantara, for when the Sports Exhaust makes your palms all sweaty.

Because we're playing with monopoly money here, I've gone a bit mad with all the options. Parking sensors and a surround-view camera, keyless go, heated seats, Sport Chrono, and the high-end Burmester stereo are all logical inclusions. Oh, and it would've been a manual, but Porsche won't sell you one yet. Boo!

I've opted for a Carrera S coupe with PDK, because of its all-round liveability. I'd be happy with this car for a decade.

Options include Miami Blue paint and jet-black wheels, working with blacked-out badges and model designation delete on the rear to deliver a stealthy vibe. I've opted for the SportDesign front apron, too, along with privacy glass, folding side mirrors and a carbon-fibre roof.

Inside, my 911 has Sport Tex seats, because screw leather, along with the Sport Chrono pack, a GT Sport steering wheel, red seatbelts and dials, ambient lighting, matte carbon fibre, the high-end surround-sound and all-weather floor mats.

Finally, on the dynamic front, there's PDCC chassis adjustment, rear-axle steering, a black sports exhaust and PASM sports suspension. Mmmm.

My choice is the Porsche 911 Carrera S Cabriolet. I've always liked the design of the coupe more, but after recently seeing the Cabriolet in the Crayon paint, I couldn't go past it.

I think two no-brainer features are PDK and the Sport Chrono Package, and I've ticked the option of electric folding exterior mirrors (because shopping trolleys), and Park Assist to prevent me from hitting them.

I've spent a bit of time making the interior look not only nice but practical for top-down motoring. To match the red convertible top, I've gone with the leather two-tone black and Bordeaux red. I've also added the embossed Porsche crest on the headrests, and added what Porsche calls the Paldao dark open-porous interior package, which is basically wood trim.

Heated seats and steering wheel is a must because when you're in a convertible the roof needs to be down all the time, otherwise buy a coupe. Seriously. Rounding out my dream Carrera S is a Burmester sound system to annoy people at traffic lights when the top is down.

Blue on black on black... Aside from the gorgeous 'Midnight Blue' body, the wheels, tailpipes, Porsche logo and just about any other 'noir-able' thing has been turned on.

The only deliberate exception to this is the brake calipers – they just look too cool to not get a little bit of attention in their very sporty yellow colour. I've also gone for the SportDesign package, including side skirts, and rear-axle steering, PASM suspension to get my bum 10mm closer to the bitumen, carbon-ceramic brakes, 21-inch Carrera S wheels and the badass GT steering wheel.

And there's no need to have the model designation, anyone worth their salt will know exactly what this is. In terms of options, I went for high performance and a few touches of indulgent comfort.

Speaking of which, there's an electric sunroof, privacy glass, heated Sports Seats because no-one likes a chilly bum, a Burmester Surround Sound system (but it'll often be turned off to hear the beautifully-tuned engine purring), and the carbon matte interior package.

Creating my ultimate 911 isn’t as simple as it might seem. There’s this theory that the best 911 is one with nothing added, but there’s so many lovely distractions in the Porsche options catalog – it’s hard not to indulge. Working on the idea of a one-two 911 garage, I’m going to save the sporty accoutrements for a GT3 when it arrives. The Carrera S pictured here shall be my grand-tourer I suppose.

I’d dearly love it to be a manual, but that option doesn’t exist yet so PDK auto it is. Visually the dark Gentian Blue metallic paint and Carrera Classic wheels give a low-key vibe. Badging gets binned, but LED matrix headlights are hard to pass up.

Sports body kits are off the list in this instance, but the sports exhaust does get a look in, even though I prefer the look of the quad-tipped standard system, the sound of the sports exhaust wins.

Inside leather and cloth combo trim in Black and Mojave Beige won my vote, although the siren’s call of an all Graphite Blue interior was hard to pass up. For a splash of retro Paldao open-pore wood on the inside and chrome window trims on the outside are the icing on an otherwise subtle rear-engined cupcake.

It wouldn't be a Configurator Challenge without an entry from Wongy would it? Check out my 911 Carrera S coupe – rear-wheel driven, bruh.

My theme was green and more green – surprise surprise, right? The exterior is finished in Lizard Green, which first debuted with the most recent GT3 RS, complemented by the SportDesign package (front and rear bumpers) and SportDesign side skirts, privacy glass, chrome window trim, carbon-fibre roof, staggered 20/21-inch RS Spyder Design wheels with full-colour Porsche crests.

I didn't even realise you could still get green interiors, but Porsche has delivered! The cabin is finished in Agave Green, contrasted with Crayon top-stitching. Instead of the usual white or red dials, I've opted for a Lizard Green centre dial and matching centre clock.

The centre storage compartment gets the Porsche crest embossed on the leather lid, while the seat headrests also have the crest embossed. I've also selected the Alcantara headliner, matte carbon interior trims, 18-way adjustable Adaptive Sports Seats Plus with memory, seat heating and ventilation, ambient lighting, the GT Sport steering wheel, matching Agave Green seatbelts, the Burmester audio system, and digital radio.

Rounding out my selected options are electric folding exterior mirrors with courtesy lighting, rear-wheel steering with Power Steering Plus, a lift kit, the larger 90L fuel tank, PASM sports suspension, LED matrix headlights, auto-dimming interior and exterior mirrors, a windscreen top tint, along with a suite of driver assistance systems – front and rear parking sensors with surround camera, lane keep assist, along with adaptive cruise control.

I'm not really a Porsche guy per se, but this 911 gets my heart racing a little.
