NSW Government to create national Autonomous Vehicle Centre of Excellence

The Australia and New Zealand Driverless Vehicle Initiative has thrown its support behind the move, which it says could help accelerate Australian adoption of the technology.

The New South Wales Government has committed to creating a National Centre of Excellence for autonomous vehicles, and will later this year host the International Driverless Vehicle Summit (IDVS).

According to the Australian Driverless Vehicle Index (ADVI), the new Centre of Excellence will help address Australia's slow progress on autonomous vehicle development.

Rita Excell, ADVI executive director, confirmed to CarAdvice the Centre of Excellence will be a space for ADVI to work with partners and startups on honing autonomous technology for local conditions. Based in Chippendale, it'll also host guest lectures on self-driving technology, and develop community projects to build "awareness, understanding and acceptance of automated vehicles".

It will be a collaboration space for ADVI partners to work together to develop and progress Australian use case, according to Excell.

"ADVI and our partners are very excited about this opportunity to align more closely with the work being undertaken in New South Wales to ensure the focus moves beyond limited trials and deployments to achieving true commercialisation of this technology as already seen in other parts of the world,” said Rita Excell.

A new agreement between Transport for NSW and ADVI will also see the IDVS moved from Adelaide, where it's been hosted for the past two years.

“Transport for New South Wales has an ambitious and comprehensive program of works in place to best prepare the state for a world where driverless vehicles share the road, and they have ensured that this technology is at the very heart of its long-term transport vision," Excell said.
