Toyota Corolla GR Sport, Trek revealed

World's most popular car to get new sport and crossover-styled packs in Europe. Australian availability is still to be confirmed at this stage.

Toyota Europe has revealed a pair of new Corolla variants for the Geneva motor show, offering two very different flavours depending on buyer preference.

First up is the Corolla GR Sport (pictured in silver), which in concept is in a similar vein to the Ford Focus ST-Line – offering sporty looks and equipment without any powertrain upgrades.

Key features of the sports pack include a new front grille with dark chrome finish, special lower skirts and rear diffuser, bespoke 18-inch machined alloys, rear privacy glass, LED headlights, fog-lights, and an exclusive Dynamic Grey with black roof paint option.

Inside, there's special sports seats with black fabric inserts and leather-look bolsters (optionally-available in full leather), along with contrasting red stitching on the dashboard, steering wheel and shifter.

The Corolla is the second model to join the company's European GR Sport range, the first being the Yaris light hatch revealed at the 2018 Paris motor show.

European buyers will be able to get their hands on the Corolla GR Sport from January 2020, available in both hatchback and Touring Sports wagon body styles with 1.8-litre and 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains.

Also revealed for the Geneva show is the new Corolla Trek (above), available exclusively for the Touring Sports wagon.

Toyota says it has created this model in response to "growing popularity of crossover-type, rugged looking vehicles within the European C-segment", making the Trek a direct rival to the likes of the Ford Focus Active wagon.

Like various models following a similar concept, the Corolla Trek gets a 20mm higher ride height for greater ground clearance, contrasting bumpers with skid plate-style treatments at the front and rear, 17-inch machined alloy wheels, rear privacy glass, front fog-lights and LED headlights.

Other model-specific features include unique two-tone fabric seats, wood-look decorative cabin trims, and a 7.0-inch infotainment screen compared to the standard Euro-market Corolla wagon.

The variant is actually named after Trek Bicycle, one of the world's most popular bike brands which currently sells around 1.5 million units per year. Toyota has committed the Corolla Trek as a support vehicle for Trek-owned men's and women's cycling teams during European cycling events.

Both 1.8-litre hybrid and 2.0-litre hybrid powertrains will be available with the Corolla Trek, with the crossover wagon variant to go on sale in Europe from August.

Australia

A Toyota Australia spokesperson said the "Corolla GR Sport and Corolla TREK models are unlikely to become available at this stage for the Australian market".

"This is something that we will study further, they continued."

"As far as future GR product is concerned, our primary goal with the introduction of any GR branded product, is that it must have a noticeable performance increase compared to the standard line up.

"However we would not rule out the introduction of GR Sport models, like the Corolla, which are focused on aesthetic and suspension changes, if there is a strong market demand."
