Cupra Formentor concept unveiled

A year after becoming its own standalone brand, Cupra has revealed its first vehicle to feature a unique body.

The Cupra Formentor concept will be given its in-the-flesh debut at the 2019 Geneva motor show, which kicks off at the beginning of March.

Although the car that will go on stage in Geneva is billed as a concept, it looks production ready — check out the interior and its proper wing mirrors! — and is likely based on the Seat Ateca crossover.

While every model in the Seat range, not to mention those from sister brands Volkswagen and Skoda, features sharp details and chiseled features, the Cupra Formentor has a much softer and more organic design.

The Formentor concept is powered by a plug-in hybrid drivetrain with a total of 180kW of power and a dual-clutch transmission. Seat says the Formentor has an electric-only range of 50 kilometres under the WLTP testing cycle.

No details yet about car's straight-line performance figures, the constituent parts of the powertrain, or whether the Formentor is equipped with front- or all-wheel drive.

The 180kW output figure does lead us to believe the Formentor could have the same powertrain as the Skoda Vision RS.

In the Scala-previewing hatch, the drivetrain consisted of a 110kW turbocharged 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine paired with a 75kW electric motor, a 13kWh lithium-ion battery pack, and a six-speed dual-clutch transmission.

The Skoda had a claimed 0-100km/h time of 7.1 seconds and a top speed of 210km/h. The Formentor might be a little slower due it being a crossover.

It's unknown if the production version of the Formentor will be offered solely as a plug-in hybrid, or if other drivetrains will be available.
