2019 Audi SQ5 TDI unveiled ahead of potential 2020 Oz launch
New diesel SQ5 model packs a V6 assisted by a turbocharger, an electric compressor and a 48V mild-hybrid system.
Audi has revealed a diesel compatriot to the SQ5, inventively dubbed the SQ5 TDI, following in the footsteps of the model's diesel-only predecessor.
Under the bonnet is a 3.0-litre V6 turbo-diesel engine assisted by an electric compressor at low revs and a 48V mild-hybrid setup.
This powertrain cranks out 255kW of power and 700Nm between 2500 and 3100rpm. All of this channelled to ground through all four wheels and an eight-speed automatic transmission.
In normal driving conditions the self-locking centre differential splits torque 40:60 between the front and rear wheels. Depending on conditions, as much as 70 per cent of torque can be directed to the front and 85 per cent to the rear.
The mild-hybrid system not only features regenerative braking, but also allows the car to coast for up to 40 seconds, as well as stop and start the engine at speeds up to 22km/h.
Audi says the SQ5 TDI is good for a 0-100km/h time of 5.1 seconds, and an electronically limited top speed of 250km/h.
By comparison the SQ5 TFSI, motivated by a 260kW/500Nm 3.0-litre turbocharged V6 petrol engine, is capable of completing the 0-100km/h standard in 5.4 seconds.
The SQ5 TDI rides on 20-inch alloy wheels with 255/45 tyres, and a suspension setup that's 30mm lower than a standard Q5. Up front the car is fitted with 375mm steel discs with aluminium six-piston calipers painted in black.
Standard features include LED head- and tail-lights, sportier bumpers, aluminium-look wing mirror covers, sports seats finished in a mixture of leather and faux suede, an 8.3-inch infotainment display, a Wi-Fi hot spot with LTE internet connectivity, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay compatibility, and wireless smartphone charging.
Options include 21-inch wheels, red brake calipers, leather seats, a dynamic steering ratio system, a digital instrumentation screen, a Bang & Olufsen sound system, and a sports rear differential, which can actively distribute torque between the rear wheels during enthusiastic driving.
Australia
The SQ5 TDI will begin trundling into European dealerships during the northern summer. Audi Australia issued the following statement to CarAdvice:
"We certainly see the appeal of the SQ5 TDI for the Australian market, given the success of this model in the last generation. We’re currently working on bringing the new SQ5 TDI to Australia in 2020."
