2020 SsangYong Korando revealed, Australian launch Q3

New-generation Korean crossover to be a technology showcase for the brand, including an all-digital instrument cluster and semi-autonomous driving capability.

The new-generation SsangYong Korando has surfaced ahead of its full reveal at the Geneva motor show next month.

Sporting a sharper design and a raft of brand-first technologies inside and out, the Korando slots between the Tivoli and the Rexton in the company's SUV line-up making it a rival to the likes of the Honda CR-V and Volkswagen Tiguan.

Up front the wide and low nose has angular lines and trapezoidal elements that echo the design of the Tivoli, while the overall shape and lighting signatures bear resemblance to the larger Rexton.

Meanwhile the sharp creases in the sides and boxy rear evoke the Tivoli as well, in keeping with the brand's current design language.

Inside, the Korando debuts what SsangYong calls the 'Blaze Cockpit', said to be inspired by the latest aircrafts. There's a 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster ahead of the driver, a 9.0-inch central infotainment system, and ambient interior lighting that can be configured in 34 colours, apparently.

SsangYong is touting the Korando's practicality, too. The 551-litre boot is quite large for the class, and the company claims it can store four golf bags.

Other highlights include a suite of driver assistance technologies, which SsangYong says gives the Korando 'Level 2.5' autonomous capability. There's adaptive cruise control with lane-centring technology, autonomous emergency braking, Exit Assist (which warns occupants if they're opening their door into oncoming traffic), driver attention alert, along with seven airbags.

It's unknown what will actually power the Korando as yet, though it's expected the 1.6-litre turbo-diesel from the Tivoli should be at least one of the options, available with both a six-speed manual and six-speed automatic.

Speaking with CarAdvice, SsangYong's local division confirmed it is expecting the new Korando to arrive during the third quarter of 2019.
