2020 Kia XCeed sketched

New Euro-market crossover previewed ahead of its Geneva reveal next month. Don't expect to see it in Australia any time soon though, the small SUV we're getting will be something else.

Kia Motors Europe has teased its upcoming small SUV, unofficially dubbed the XCeed, ahead of its unveiling at the Geneva motor show early next month.

Set to slot between the little Stonic and the mid-sized Sportage in Kia's European line-up, the XCeed will have a lot in common with the Ceed hatchback and Sportswagon it will share its underpinnings with.

Recently spied camouflaged prototypes indicate the XCeed will look a lot like its passenger car counterparts as well, though it's reported the sheetmetal will be entirely new – for example, the Ceed family all have pretty much the same front ends but differ from the B-pillar back.

Key rivals will include the likes of the Ford Focus Active and Subaru XV, along with more conventional SUVs like the Nissan Qashqai and Volkswagen T-Roc.

The XCeed is expected to offer a similar range of powertrains as the Ceed, meaning small-capacity three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines are likely.

It's unclear whether the XCeed will get a 150kW/265Nm GT-badged version like the Ceed and Proceed, though it would serve as a worthy rival to turbocharged versions of the Hyundai Kona along with the 140TSI variant of the T-Roc offered overseas.

Recent reports out of Europe indicate the XCeed will also debut a new all-digital instrument cluster, which should rollout across the company's wider line-up in the near future.

Other technology highlights should include a wide range of available driver assistance and active safety systems, including everything from autonomous emergency braking and lane-keep assist to adaptive cruise control with stop&go.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for our coverage of the XCeed's reveal at the Geneva motor show in March.

Australia

Earlier this month, Kia's local communications boss confirmed with CarAdvice that the XCeed will not be the small SUV the brand plans to bring Down Under before the end of the year.

Kevin Hepworth described the XCeed and the unofficially named Tusker as "different cars", with the approach similar to how Kia Europe offers the Ceed and Proceed while Kia Australia offers the Cerato sedan and hatchback.

The Tusker, or whatever it will be called, is the production version of the SP concept revealed at last year's New Delhi motor show, and is slated to arrive in local showrooms around September or October this year.
