Hyundai sub-Kona SUV: Australia confirmed, New York debut likely

Korean manufacturer will show off its new sub-compact crossover in April, completing the company's SUV line-up. It'll arrive Down Under in the second half of 2019.

Hyundai has confirmed it will present a new baby crossover next month at the New York motor show, slotting underneath the Kona in its global line-up.

Speaking with North America's Motor Trend, SangYup Lee, head of the Hyundai Global Design Center in Namyang, Korea, confirmed the new model will be unveiled in the Big Apple in April, and hinted at what to expect from the design.

"It's smaller and it's distinctively different than Kona," he said, "so imagine Kona as a really fast profile, distinctive, iconic character to it, but this one is almost very boxy, bold, bull-doggy character."

According to the Motor Trend report, the new model "will not sit on the same platform as the Kona".

The new Hyundai crossover will compete in the pint-sized A-segment, competing with models like the Ford Ecosport, Suzuki Ignis, and Volkswagen T-Cross.

Further details will likely come to hand in the lead-up to the new model's April reveal in New York.

Speaking with CarAdvice, Hyundai's local arm confirmed we should see the new model in Australian showrooms in the second half of 2019, with more to be revealed closer to launch. Stay tuned.
