2020 Skoda Kamiq sketched

The brand's smallest SUV looks almost exactly like the Vision X concept that previewed it, and that's no bad thing. It'll even get scrolling indicators

Skoda has teased its upcoming Kamiq crossover once again, this time in a set of design sketches that look pretty similar to the concept vehicle that previewed it last year.

The frontal and rear views of the baby SUV show the global version of the Kamiq (not to be confused with the model of the same name revealed for China last year) will draw heavy inspiration from the boldly-styled Vision X concept shown at the 2018 Geneva motor show.

Key design cues include a new split headlight arrangement that sees the main beam separated from the LED daytime-running lights – a first for the Skoda brand.

It's not the first time we've seen a setup like this before, though. Think Hyundai Kona and Santa Fe, along with the Jeep Cherokee.

There's a contrasting silver insert in the front bumper which acts as a faux skid plate to 'underscore off-road looks', while the Kamiq will become the first Skoda model to offer dynamic 'scrolling' indicators at both the front and rear.

Out the back, the Kamiq sports what Skoda calls 'C-shaped' tail-lights, though we'd argue they're more like boomerangs, which are clear links to the Vision X concept.

The shape of the tailgate and rear bumper also hark back to the Vision X, so we reckon you should have a good idea of what the production model should look like.

As previously reported, the Kamiq should be based on the Volkswagen Group's MQB-A0 architecture, which underpins various models like the Volkswagen Polo and new T-Cross, along with the Audi A1.

Powertrains will likely come in the form of small-capacity turbocharged petrol and diesel engines, including three- and four-cylinder units. Expect manual and dual-clutch automatic transmissions to be offered, though it's unclear whether the Kamiq will be available with all-wheel drive.

Stay tuned to CarAdvice for all the latest in the lead-up to the Kamiq's reveal in Geneva next month.
