Seat concept teased ahead of Mobile World Congress debut

New concept car will preview the marque's 'mobility platform', and could feature 5G connectivity and autonomous driving functionality.

While new smartphones will make most of the headlines at Mobile World Congress 2019, Seat will be using the gathering to unveil a new "mobility platform" concept car.

Details about the car are thin on the ground right now, with the company stating the concept will make a "difference in Seat's urban micromobility strategy".

Luca de Meo, head of the Seat brand, said in a prepared statement: "Mobility is changing, and our role as a manufacturer and provider of mobility is changing with it. We must be able to manage and offer new mobility platforms that will be the key players in cities of the future."

In announcing the concept vehicle, Seat confirmed it is also working on a "5G Connected Car" pilot with Telefónica and the city of Barcelona.

The pilot project will use next-generation mobile connectivity services to allow cars to communicate with each other, as well as transportation infrastructure, as part of a "first step toward collaborative, autonomous driving".

It's not known if this technology will be included in the upcoming concept.

With its illuminated triangular grille, the new Seat concept looks set to deviate quite a bit from the company's house style.

It's possible the car could also provide a little bit of insight into the styling of future production Seat vehicles.

Although unveiling new vehicles at smartphone trade show does seem odd, it should be kept in mind Mobile World Congress is hosted in Barcelona, and Seat is Spain's only indigenous mass-market automotive brand.
