2020 Kia ‘XCeed’ spied

New crossover expected to be revealed in Geneva next month, bridging the gap between the Stonic and Sportage. It's unclear whether it'll be offered Down Under, however, due to its close ties with the Euro-market Ceed hatch.

Spy photographers have snapped the Kia Ceed-based SUV once again during cold weather testing in Europe, ahead of an anticipated reveal in the coming months.

The new model is rumoured to be badged the 'XCeed', slotting between the pint-sized Stonic and larger Sportage in Kia Europe's line-up.

As the name suggests, the new crossover will have a lot in common with the Ceed hatchback – think of it as a competitor to hatch-based crossovers like the Ford Focus Active and Subaru XV.

With that in mind, it'll get a beefier, more rugged look than its road-biased sibling, though the family resemblance should be strong despite the unique body panels.

Engines will likely come in the form of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel engines, though it's unclear at this stage whether the XCeed will offer all-wheel drive.

Furthermore, a plug-in hybrid could debut at some point down the track given the Ceed has been confirmed to receive a petrol-electric variant sometime this year.

It's believed Kia's European division has been benchmarking the Volkswagen T-Roc, as one was spotted with the development prototype.

Stay tuned for further details on the Kia XCeed in the coming months, potentially during the Geneva motor show next month.

Australia

Kia's local arm has been desperately wanting a small SUV to fill the gaping hole in its line-up. So far, we're expecting to get the production version of the SP concept, revealed at last year's New Delhi motor show, around September or October this year.

The SP and XCeed will be different cars, according to Kia Australia's communications boss, Kevin Hepworth, meaning the two models will likely be two different vehicles based on similar underpinnings, similar to the Ceed and Cerato.
