Volkswagen confirms T-Roc R – video

Volkswagen has officially confirmed the T-Roc R for production, teasing the little performance crossover in a short clip on YouTube this week.

We've seen plenty of development prototypes for the R-badged T-Roc over the last year or so, and the production version shouldn't stray far from those vehicles – T-Roc body with subtle aero add-ons, big wheels and brakes, and a quad-tipped exhaust.

It's likely the T-Roc R will share most of its running gear with the Audi SQ2, revealed for last year's Paris motor show.

Power should come from a 2.0-litre turbo four shared with everything from the SQ2 to the Volkswagen Golf R and Audi S3, developing 220kW of power and 400Nm of torque, sent to the ground via a 4Motion all-wheel drive system.

Expect 0-100 to take less than 5.0 seconds, while top speed should be limited to 250km/h.

While Volkswagen hasn't confirmed exactly when we'll see the T-Roc R in its final form, a Geneva motor show reveal next month seems likely.

Paul Pottinger, general manager for corporate communications at Volkswagen Australia, said the local arm would love to offer the T-Roc R, though couldn't say whether it'll make it into our showrooms.

"[The] T-Roc R would be perfect for Australia – the third biggest R market in the world, a market in which Golf R outsells GTI," he said.

"But we can’t confirm it, unfortunately."

Currently, global production constraints have forced the core T-Roc range off the table for Australia, at least for the time being, despite initially being revealed in August 2017.
