The new mid-sized Toyota SUV will launch with a huge array of active safety equipment, regardless of trim. Options abound, with a total of 11 variants on offer.

Toyota Australia has announced further details about the upcoming 2019 RAV4, claiming it'll offer class-leading safety across the range.

Regardless of trim, the mid-sized SUV will come with adaptive cruise control, pre-collision safety system (autonomous emergency braking) with pedestrian/cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, road sign monitoring, and automatic high-beam as standard from the base model.

The RAV4 will also come with blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, a rear-view camera, parking sensors at both ends, and seven airbags.

Although the manual misses out, cars fitted with an automatic – torque converter or CVT, depending on model – will also include stop/go capability in the active cruise, and lane-keeping assist.

Toyota laid down a marker with its Corolla last year, offering its Safety Sense 2 suite standard across the range. It appears that wasn't a token gesture, and the entire range will eventually benefit from that focus on safety technology.

Moving on from safety, a total of 11 variants will be offered when the RAV4 arrives during the second quarter of 2019. Three powertrains, four trim grades and a choice of front- or all-wheel drive, along with the addition of an 'adventure' focused Edge, make up the model range.

The hybrid powertrain will be offered in three different flavours: entry-level GX, mid-range GXL, and range-topping Cruiser. All three will be offered with front- or all-wheel, taking the total number of electrified variants on offer to six.

Power comes from a 155kW hybrid setup, mated to an e-CVT.

Meanwhile, the entry powertrain is a 2.0-litre petrol engine making 127kW and 207Nm, hooked up to a six-speed manual or a CVT.

Finally, the Edge will be offered with a 2.5-litre petrol engine with 152kW and 243Nm, putting power to the road through a mechanical all-wheel drive system and conventional eight-speed torque converter automatic.
