2020 Nissan Juke to debut this year with electrified option – report

The second-generation crossover is due to be revealed at some point over the next 12 months, based on the Renault Clio's platform meaning electrification is an option.

The current Nissan Juke is getting a little long in the tooth, and the company's European marketing boss has indicated an all-new version is due to be revealed sometime this year, ahead of a market launch in 2020.

Speaking with the UK's Auto Express, Helen Perry, Nissan Europe head of small car marketing said: "[The current Juke] is in the latter period of its life. For sure, in the next year you’ll hear more about the new Juke".

First launched in 2011, the current Nissan Juke is nearly a decade old and has only received one major update since its introduction. In 2018, Nissan produced the one millionth Juke at its Sunderland factory in the UK, after just eight years on sale.

The new one is expected to ride on a version of the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance's new CMF-B architecture serving as the basis of the recently-revealed fifth-gen Renault Clio.

Should that be the case, that opens up the possibility for electrification, namely a hybrid. However, Nissan Europe's product planning chief, Peter Bedrosian, told Auto Express there are numerous powertrain options being considered.

"People are moving from sedans and hatches into SUV-type vehicles, that’s happening globally, not just in Europe," he said to the publication.

"And on top of that here’s electrification, so it’s a perfect combination. We’re working on several powertrain options at the moment."

The other major area for improvement is driver assistance technologies, something the ageing current model lacks. Expect the new model to feature Nissan's latest iterations of its autonomous emergency braking, lane-keep assist and adaptive cruise control systems to challenge the class leaders.

Like the larger Qashqai, the Juke could push a little upmarket to compete with mainstream and premium players in the small crossover segment, including everything from the Honda HR-V and Mazda CX-3 to the Audi Q2 and Lexus UX.

Engines will likely be a range of three- and four-cylinder petrol and diesel units, probably all turbocharged. Expect front- and all-wheel drive to be available depending on market, along with the choice of manual and automatic transmissions.
