Hyundai Tucson N coming with 253kW – report

A new report claims the Korean manufacturer is developing performance SUV to challenge the Europeans. As for timing, it's expected the Tucson N will arrive sometime over the next two years.

Hyundai is reportedly preparing a hi-po N version of its popular Tucson to rival the likes of the Cupra Ateca.

According to the UK's Auto Express, 'insiders' claim the Tucson N will pump out over 250kW and hit triple figures in 'under six seconds'.

Further details are still to be confirmed, though the publication's sources did say that Hyundai is "not interested in making also-ran cars with N badges on them in whatever class they compete".

The performance SUV is expected to launch 'within the next two years', and will serve as the N Division's flagship until it launches its bespoke halo model – details of that are scarce as well.

While Hyundai is yet to mention what platform the new halo model will be based on, it's likely the vehicle will be inspired by the mid-engined RM16 N concept, which has been spied testing at the Nurburgring (above).

The concept version was powered by a 2.0-litre turbo four making 220kW and 383Nm. Given Hyundai has also been testing i30-based prototypes with all-wheel drive, all-paw traction could be in the pipeline as well.

Other potential N models include a performance version of the i20 light hatch to compete with the Ford Fiesta ST and Volkswagen Polo GTI.
