Hyundai i30 Fastback N: Australian debut due March or April

Hyundai's more practical, sloping-roofed i30 N is bound for our shores in the coming months, with just as much turbocharged firepower as its hatchback sibling.

Hyundai has confirmed its coupe-styled i30 Fastback N will be touching down in Australia during March or April.

With power from the same 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder engine as the i30 N hatchback, making the same 202kW and 353Nm – and jumping to 378Nm on overboost.

For now, the engine is mated exclusively to a six-speed manual transmission, but a dual-clutch auto is coming late this year. Purists will be happy with the three-pedal car, but the mainstream market is heavily skewed towards automatics. Hyundai Australia will be keen to get the DCT, and it'll be keen to get it soon.

The 100km/h sprint takes 6.1 seconds, and top speed is 250km/h. Where the Fastback separates itself from the hatch is on the practicality front. Thanks to its sloping tailgate, the boot will take 450L worth of stuff, or 15 per cent more than the hatchback with its rear seats in place.

Folding the rear seats expands that luggage space to a more-than-handy 1351L.

Complete pricing and specifications will be revealed closer to launch, but you can expect it to be well-specced if the hatchback is any guide. Starting at $39,990 before on-roads, it comes with a variable exhaust, launch control, 19-inch alloy wheels, dual-zone climate control, an 8.0-inch touchscreen and sports seats.

The Hyundai SmartSense package with autonomous emergency braking, driver attention alert, forward collision warning and lane-keeping assist is also standard locally. Adaptive cruise and blind-spot monitoring are both notably absent.

Two options packages are available: the Luxury Pack, and the Luxury Pack with panoramic sunroof. The $3000 Luxury Pack brings front parking sensors, 12-way power adjustable front seats, leather and suede seat trim, keyless entry and start, wireless smartphone charging, privacy glass, heated seats, and an auto-dimming rear-view mirror.

The $5000 Luxury Pack with sunroof brings all the same features as above, with a panoramic sunroof. Duh.

Whether the Fastback will maintain that options pricing and setup, or whether Hyundai will pitch the Fastback as a more expensive, premium option with more standard equipment, remains to be seen.

Stay tuned for full pricing and specs in the run up to the car's launch.
