2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door pricing and specs

Surprise unveil at Bathurst 12 Hour for new AMG performance sedan.

Mercedes-Benz has announced pricing for the new 2019 Mercedes-AMG GT 4-Door ahead of its arrival in local showrooms mid-year, unveiling the car at this weekend’s Bathurst 12 Hour motor race.

Two models will initially be available: the six-cylinder GT 53 4Matic+ from $249,900 plus on-road costs and the flagship twin-turbo V8 GT 63 S 4Matic+ from $349,900 plus on-road costs.

Although it looks like a sedan version of the GT coupe, it is in fact a bespoke four-door coupe-like body draped over the underpinnings of the Mercedes E63 AMG wagon, but with slightly wider and longer dimensions and, of course, heavily reworked suspension tuning.

Even though the order books have only just opened, Mercedes says it expects the GT 63 S will account for most demand.

By way of comparison, the Mercedes E63 S AMG sedan costs from $239,500 and the AMG GT coupe pricing ranges from $261,000 to $351,000 plus on-roads.

The AMG GT 53 sedan is powered by a twin turbo (one electric, one conventional) in-line six-cylinder petrol engine assisted by Mercedes’ new electric powertrain called “EQ Boost” that gives a combined output of 320kW and 520Nm. Matched to a nine-speed auto and all-wheel-drive, Mercedes claims a 0-100km/h time of 4.5 seconds.

The AMG GT 63 sedan is powered by AMG’s familiar twin-turbo 4.0-litre V8 with a healthy 470kW of power and a staggering 900Nm of torque. It's the most powerful version of this engine and has the equal highest torque (with the S63 AMG). Also matched to a nine-speed auto and all-wheel-drive Mercedes claims a 0-100km/h time of a supercar-quick 3.2 seconds.

Mercedes says the GT 4-Door is the latest member of the Mercedes-AMG GT family, including the two-seat, two-door GT, GT S, GT C and track-focused GT R models, all of which “are descended from the SLS AMG ‘Gullwing’, the first car developed in-house by AMG, which itself is a homage to the iconic Mercedes-Benz SL roadsters of the 1950s and 1960s”.

Both the GT 53 and GT 63 sedan come standard with an extensive suite of safety equipment including nine airbags and crash avoidance tech, such as active blind spot assistance, cross traffic alert, lane change assistance and 360-degree ‘bird’s eye view’ cameras so you don’t scratch the rims.

Both models come standard in five-seat configuration but a four-seat option is available.

Options for the GT 53 include an exterior chrome package ($2500 MRLP), carbon-fibre package ($9500), night package ($2500), luxury rear package ($5300), and warmth comfort package ($1300).

The GT 63 is available with an exterior carbon-fibre package ($9500 MRLP), night package ($1500), luxury rear package ($4600), warmth comfort package ($1300), an aerodynamics package ($7300), and carbon package II ($11,600).

The prices of some options are different on the two models because their level of standard equipment varies slightly.

The arrival of the GT 4-Door caps off a record year for AMG sales in Australia.

However preliminary figures for January show that the new-car market has slowed for the 10th month in a row, with luxury brands being hit hardest.
