2019 Mercedes-Benz V-Class revealed

There's also an electric variant coming, set to be previewed with a concept car at the Geneva motor show in March. New engines, revised trims and a tweaked look headline the internal-combustion upgrades.

Mercedes-Benz has unveiled its facelifted V-Class van, complete with the promise of a fully-electric variant, ahead of a third-quarter arrival in Australia.

As you'd expect of a mid-life tickle, changes to the V-Class are subtle on the outside. The front bumper has been redesigned in search of a more aggressive stance, while the AMG Line package now brings a diamond radiator grille in keeping with the wider range.

An extra four paint colours and four alloy wheel designs have been added to the catalogue, but otherwise it's business as usual. Given the V-Class is a favourite of commercial drivers, what's changed under the skin is more important instead.

Business travellers will love the availability of the reclining, massaging, climate-controlled seats in the rear, while the wider cabin is versatile as ever. There are layouts ranging from four lounge-styled seats to six forward-facing units, depending on how the car's being used.

Drivers are faced with freshly redesigned air vents and refined trim options, and there's a new leather colour available, but the cabin changes are just as subtle as those applied to the exterior.

So, why has Mercedes bothered with the upgrade? Well there are improvements to the range of engines on offer, for one. The OM654 diesel four-cylinder engine first used in the latest E-Class will be added to the line-up, designed to deliver better performance, greater refinement, and lower emissions.

Although the release doesn't outline the entire list of models will gain the fresh engine, it makes 143kW and 400Nm of power in the E220d, which would make it a natural fit in the V220d. Stay tuned on that one. It'll be paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission, dubbed 9G-Tronic.

In top spec, the OM654 turbo-diesel is being used as the V300d's new engine, making 176kW and 500Nm in normal conditions, or an extra 30Nm on over boost. The 300d isn't currently offered in Australia, however.

An electric model will eventually be offered, previewed with an EQ V concept in Geneva next month. Given the eVito and eSprinter have both been revealed, this seems like a logical procession.

Although detail is also once again lacking, Mercedes-Benz says the car's "multifaceted range of safety and assistance systems will become more comprehensive with the facelift" when it arrives. Autonomous emergency braking will be offered, complete with pedestrian detection.

Plus, the smarter high-beam assistance system is now able to handle the high/low-beam dipping by itself. Local specifications are yet to be revealed, so stay tuned to see what makes the list of local equipment.
