Range Rover SV Coupe axed before production begins

The limited-edition three-door SUV coupe has been cancelled, with the company electing to focus its resources on new model development.

The Range Rover SV Coupe has been nixed before a single model could trundle down the production line.

Unveiled before last year's Geneva motor show, the SV Coupe is a three-door variant of the full-size Range Rover developed by the company's Special Vehicle Operations (SVO) arm.

In a statement released to Autocar and other UK media outlets, the company said: "We have taken the difficult decision to inform our customers that the Range Rover SV Coupé will not proceed into production. Instead, Land Rover is focusing its resources and investment on the next generation of world-class products.

“With exciting plans for electrification, enhanced craftsmanship, innovation and technology we are working to ensure that we continue to offer our customers a choice of world leading SUVs.”

Earlier this month Jaguar Land Rover confirmed it will cut 4500 jobs, or around 10 per cent of its global workforce, as part of a drive to save £2.5 billion ($4.5 billion) over 18 months and bring the automaker back to profitability.

As well as having two doors removed, the coupe also featured a faster roof line, a more steeply raked tailgate, and longer doors with frameless window glass.

Despite its visual similarity to the five-door model, all of the coupe's exterior panels, excluding the bonnet and lower tailgate section, were unique. The coupe did share the five-door's wheelbase, though.

The company planned to build just 999 coupes with a starting price of £240,000 ($430,000).

Under the bonnet the SV Coupe featured a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 with 416kW of power and 700Nm of torque. Fitted with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard, the SV Coupe had a quoted 0-100km/h time of 5.3 seconds and a top speed of 266km/h.
