Subaru BRZ and Toyota 86 successor cancelled – report

Remember the reports from last year? The ones that said there was another BRZ and Toyota 86 coming? Turns out there's a new report that directly contradicts it...

Toyota might be committed to bringing the fun back into its line-up, but that's no guarantee its affordable, rear-wheel drive collaboration with Subaru will make it into a second generation.

Reports from Japan have suggested Toyota and Subaru have decided to put a stop to their BRZ and 86 joint venture, with Toyota instead turning focus to the lower-end four-cylinder Supra and rumoured electric MR2.

The whispers come from Japanese Nostalgic Carwhich says Best Motoring is preparing a report with more details. It's set to be released later this month, which would suggest we'll know in the next few days...

Should it be true, that report directly contradicts a story from the Japan Times saying the second-generation BRZ/86 was set for a 2021 debut. It said the car's engine would grow to 2.4-litres, but there was no word on whether forced induction will feature.

As for the MR2 mentioned earlier? Well chief engineer on the Supra, Tetsuya Tada, often references the brand's Three Brothers. That'd be the Supra, Celica and MR2, for those playing along at home.

We now have a Supra, and the 86 fills the void left by Celica at the moment, making the MR2 a missing piece of the puzzle.

European marketing executives in October told Autocar a new MR2 was at the "discussion stage" within head office, and that the car was a 'favoured potential addition to the product plan'.
