2020 Renault Clio revealed, Australian debut confirmed

We got a look at the interior last night, now it's time to check out the exterior. The new supermini is designed to take the fight to the Volkswagen Polo with more tech, sharper style and a new RS Line exterior treatment.

Renault has finally revealed the exterior of its new 2019 Clio, following last night's look at the car's high-tech cabin and today's leak of the exterior design, which appeared on Instagram some hours ago.

UPDATE 05/03/2019: Renault has now revealed the car's range of powertrains. Details have been added to the story below.

According to its designers, the Clio is "more elegant and dynamic" than its cutesy predecessor, with a larger grille and more pronounced air intakes than before.

It's a handy 14mm shorter than before and up to 30mm lower in the roof, in an attempt to improve aerodynamics and deliver a sportier, more hunkered-down look.

The new headlights are 100 per cent LED, with the same c-shaped graphics as the wider Renault range, while the rear lights have been revised to also include the brand's signature 'c' motif.

They're meant to look more three dimensional than before, as is becoming more common in the industry.

With chrome highlights along the side and rear of the car, along with gloss black window pillars and hidden rear door handles, Renault has tried to refine the outgoing car's profile into something a bit slicker than before.

On the practicality front, the new rear has been designed to deliver a squarer, more useful boot, with 391 litres of space on offer.

That's 40L more than the Volkswagen Polo, and almost 60L more than you get in the Toyota Corolla ZR Hybrid.

If you had to guess, what would you say Renault is missing at the moment? If you guessed 'a sports-themed trim level that doesn't offer more performance, but instead a sportier style' you'd be bang-on.

BMW has M Sport, Mercedes has AMG line, Hyundai has N Line, Ford has ST-Line... the list goes on. Now, Renault has RS-Line (shown here in blue), likely to spread and eat up the GT-Line debuted on the Megane.

In the Clio's case, the new trim level brings styling touches like an F1-blade in the front bumper, a honeycomb grille, a perforated leather steering wheel and aluminium touch points are all included.

Power comes from a huge range of petrol, diesel and hybrid powertrains, headlined by a new electrified powertrain combining a 1.2kWh battery pack with an electric motor and a 1.6L petrol engine, for better performance and efficiency. Or so Renault says – no performance figures have actually been revealed, yet, so we'll have to reserve judgement until more detail is available.

Along with the mysterious hybrid, the new Clio will be offered with petrol engines making 65hp (48kW) and 75hp (56kW) when coupled with a five-speed manual, 75kW with a manual or 'x-tronic' automatic, and 97kW when coupled with a dual-clutch transmission.

Renault says it wants to launch the Clio locally in 2020, but exact timing is still to be confirmed.
