2019 Renault Twingo revealed
Renault's twin to the Smart has been given a very (very!) mild update for Europe, but it's still the same slightly quirky, rear-engined city car as before.
Renault has launched a (very mildly) revised version of its rear-engined city car, bringing it into line with the wider range's styling direction.
Gone are the Twingo's distinctive in-bumper spotlights, sacrificed in favour of a cleaner look designed to make the snout look wider than before.
We're not sure of the logic behind giving a rear-engined car more prominent 'air intakes' on the front bumper, but hey, form trumps function sometimes.
The car's grille has been given a glitzy makeover, bringing it more closely into line with Renault's latest line of SUVs. In a move that's decidedly un-SUV, the ride has been dropped by 10mm for a lower coefficient of drag.
Changes are more subtle at the rear, where the graphics have been updated and... that's about it. On the practicality front, there's now a handle for the boot lid, designed to make life easier for drivers with an armful of shopping.
The parcel shelf in the boot has been reinforced, too, making it a more secure place to actually put that shopping.
Under the boot floor, both three-cylinder engines have been given a very minor (4kW) power bump. The entry-level 1.0L atmospheric engine now makes 56kW, the upper-spec 0.9L turbo offers 71kW. It's put to the rear wheels, once again, through a five-speed manual as standard, although a six-speed dual-clutch transmission is offered with the top-spec model.
Pictured here is the 'le coq sportif' edition, a limited-run special complete with red, white and blue detailing around the exterior and interior.
Unfortunately, the Twingo isn't offered in Australia. The now-replaced Renault Australia managing director, Justin Hocevar, has told CarAdvice the car would simply be too expensive if it was brought Down Under.
