2020 GMC Sierra Heavy Duty makes trailers transparent

Ever struggled to work out what's hiding behind your trailer? New technology from the GMC Sierra Heavy Duty is designed to make that problem a thing of the past.

GMC has debuted new technology allowing drivers to see what's behind their trailers on its new Sierra Heavy Duty, as part of an expanded suite of tech features designed to make life easier for people who are always towing.

Headlining the technology suite is the aforementioned transparent trailer view, combining the view from the car's rear-view camera with a unit you attach to the rear of the trailer. The resulting view is as if you're looking through the trailer, ideal for laughing at the queue of cars you've enraged by ignoring the fourth-straight slow-vehicle turnoff on the Great Ocean Road. Not really, but also, kind of.

Owners are also able to fit a camera inside their caravan or trailer, and monitor precious cargo through the in-dash infotainment system.

All told, there are 15 different camera angles available to the driver, designed to make it easier to manoeuvre what is a very, very big truck.  Along with the new-school video technology, GMC has given the Sierra HD wider mirrors. It's the little (big) things that matter, hey?

Power in the Sierra HD comes from a 6.6L turbo-diesel engine making 445hp (332kW) and 1354Nm, complete with a more efficient cooling system and a new 10-speed automatic transmission. According to GMC, the transmission has closer-stacked ratios to keep the engine in its power band for longer, making it a more capable heavy-hauler.

Details about a new petrol engine, along with nitty-gritty details about how much the HD will tow, will be released soon.

GMC says the truck has a "class-leading" cargo bed capacity, while the bed itself has 12 tie-downs. It also has a lower point upon which drivers can attach a trailer with a gooseneck hinge, making it easier to hitch big loads.
