Pagani Huayra R: Hardcore supercar snapped in testing

With a big wing, aggressive rear diffuser and ankle-breaking splitter, the hardcore supercar appears to follow in the Zonda R's footsteps.

A mysterious Pagani Huayra wearing a wild aerodynamics package has been spied in testing, sparking speculation an 'R' variant could be on the way.

The images, snapped by iuri.giova on Instagram, reveal a massive rear wing and super-aggressive diffuser, along with what appears to be a fin running down the car's spine.

Changes are tougher to discern up front, but the test mule appears to wear a lower, sharper diffuser than the standard model, along with louvred front guards. Those guards also look slightly more angular than the standard units, although Pagani's zebra camouflage makes it hard to nail down exactly where the two differ.

As with the Zonda R released in 2009, there's a roof scoop that appears to float above the body feeding air to mid-mounted V12 engine.

Speaking of the engine, it's tough to know exactly how much power the mysterious test mule is making. Logic would suggest it'll draw on an uprated version of the 6.0-litre twin-turbo engine powering the regular Huayra, potentially in the same state of tune as the Huayra BC.

If that's the case, drivers will have 552kW of power and 1000Nm of torque, put to the rear wheels through a seven-speed automated manual transmission.

There's no word on when the Huayra R, or whatever the car pictured here actually is, will be revealed. The Zonda R was unveiled at the Geneva motor show, so there's a chance the hottest Huayra will be unveiled in March.
