2019 Audi Q4 spied

Audi is preparing a sloping-roofed variant of its ever-popular Q3 crossover, set to take on the Volvo XC40 and BMW X2. A debut in September looks likely, but nothing is locked in... yet.

A new coupe-styled Audi crossover, likely to be badged Q4 or Q3 Sportback, has been snapped testing in the snow.

In keeping with the theme laid out by the Q8, the Q4 (or Q3 Sportback, if Audi and Alfa Romeo can't settle their name-based differences) will be a sportier-looking, sloping-roofed version of the Q3 SUV.

As you can see, the car pictured here has a more coupe-like silhouette than the regular Q3, and the taillights appear slightly slimmer. Although it's tough to tell, the nose of the Q4 might be more aggressive than that of its regular-roofed brethren. Time will tell on that one.

Beyond the new looks, expect the Q4 to mirror the Q3's engine line-up almost exactly. That means a 1.5-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making 110kW and 250Nm will be offered, along with a 2.0-litre making 140kW or 169kW depending on how much you're willing to pay.

Front- and all-wheel drive are available in the Q3, meaning both options are likely open for Q4 buyers, although the upmarket positioning of other brands' coupe-crossover models may force Audi to go with only the more expensive all-wheel drive system. At this point, it's only speculation.

RS variants are expected to come in due course. A debut at the Frankfurt motor show in September seems likely at this point for the wider range, but the Geneva motor show in March could also serve as a launchpad.
