Lotus looking to build cars in China – report

The storied marque's new owners need to diversify its manufacturing footprint, and a Chinese factory looks like stage one.

Lotus looks likely to start manufacturing vehicles at a huge new factory in China, according to overseas reports.

Reporting from newswire Reuters has revealed a US$1.3 billion factory is being readied in Wuhan Province, as Zhejiang Geely Holding Group gets its hands dirty in search of greater volumes and, subsequently, profits from the storied brand.

The factory plans were uncovered in previously-unreleased government documents, backed by a number of job postings in the relevant area.

Speaking with Reuters, Zhejiang Geely said expanding Lotus's manufacturing footprint is a central part of its plan to grow the brand.

“Details on additional locations and models will be confirmed in due course,” the company said.

According to the report, the factory is approved to build all-electric battery cars, hybrids, and internal-combustion vehicles. Although it's currently internal-combustion only, reports have suggested an all-electric Lotus flagship is on the way.
