Nissan Altima-te AWD revealed in Canada

Keen to take on the snow? Nissan Canada might have a solution for you...

Nissan Canada has unveiled an Altima like no other, fitting its mid-sized sedan with a set of tracks to celebrate the arrival of all-wheel drive on the regular range.

This isn't the first time Nissan has ripped the wheels off one of its mundane family cars and replaced them with tracks. A trio of Winter Warrior concepts introduced us to the idea in 2016, but familiarity hasn't made the rugged look any less interesting.

According to Nissan, the tracks are 1220mm long, 750mm tall and 380mm wide, forcing a few dramatic changes to the body. A set of 360mm fender flares were required to accomodate the off-road-ready hardware.

The ride-height also has been raised by a whopping 80mm, thanks in part to a set of chassis tweaks, and in part to a new suspension. Nissan, rather amusingly, says the changes have all been undertaken with the goal of restoring "proper kinematics" after the big changes. Wouldn't want the car to look weird, would you?

All the parts were designed and developed in-house, taking up a significant portion of the 250 hours poured into creating the Altima-te AWD.

The track-equipped Altima will do the rounds of Canadian motor shows this year. Although you can't buy one for the road, the regular wheel-wearing car now comes with all-wheel drive as standard in the Great White North.
