Toyota Supra to lap Nurburgring in around 7:40

But it hasn't been taken to the Green Hell just yet, and the speed limiter could cause problems.

If you hadn't gathered by now, the new Toyota Supra is kind of a big deal. But amid the storm of details about transmissions, engines and design, one figure has been conspicuously absent: a lap time at the Nurburgring.

Turns out, there's a very good reason for that. Tetsuya Tada, chief engineer on the project, told Road&Track the hotly-anticipated A90 Supra is yet to lap the Green Hell.

"We haven't had an official time attack yet," he told the American magazine, suggesting the car's 155mph (250km/h) speed limiter could cause problems on the long Nurburgring back straight.

"One day, perhaps, we cut the speed limiter and try the time attack," he went on.

"But even just driving it as it is, it's really fast. On the old course, it's very easy to break eights—7:50, 7:40. It will do that easily."

Power in the new Supra comes from a 3.0-litre inline-six making 250kW and 500Nm, mated with an eight-speed automatic transmission as standard. Want a manual? Bad luck, there won't be one at launch, but demand could force Toyota's hand eventually.

Along with the six-cylinder flagship, there will be a pair of four-cylinder options available in Japan. Which of those will be offered in Australia remains to be seen.
