The Infiniti Q30 and Infiniti QX30 twins, which currently use underpinnings borrowed from Mercedes-Benz, will be replaced by a model unique to Nissan's luxury marque.
"[The Q30/QX30 is] not a very successful product. We’ll keep selling it for now ... but this is not a product that has a future beyond its current life," Christian Meunier, president of Infiniti, told Motor Authority at the Detroit motor show.
Meunier stated the cars will be replaced by a vehicle riding on "an all-Infiniti platform". The Infiniti boss hinted the new model could employ a variable-compression turbo engine similar to the one in the QX50, albeit with a displacement under two litres.
It's not clear when this vehicle will appear, though.
Both the Q30 and the QX30 went into production in 2016 at Nissan's factory in Sunderland, UK. Although the exterior is a uniquely Infiniti affair, the Q30 and QX30 ride on the Mercedes-Benz MFA platform used by the current GLA and previous-generation A-Class.
The Q30/QX30 were conceived as part of Nissan's partnership with Daimler, parent of Mercedes-Benz. The two companies have worked together in other ventures, including the Navara-based X-Class, and a new jointly run factory in Mexico.
Sales of the Q30 and QX30 have been slow. Last year Infiniti Australia shifted just 170 units of the twins, down from 225 in 2017.
That's well behind the segment-leading Mercedes-Benz GLA (3906). Indeed the pair held the wooden spoon in the segment, just five sales behind the Lexus UX, which went on sale in November.
